THE GRAND BOLERO
THE GRAND BOLERO – Italy, 2021, 90 min., Thriller, Romance, Drama
Director: Gabriele Fabbro
Writers: Gabriele Fabbro, Ydalie Turk
Cast: Lidia Vitale, Brandon Koen, Ludovica Mancini, Marcello Mariani, Filippo Prandi
In this Covid-era Italian thriller, Roxanne, a cold middle aged pipe organ restorer battles to suppress her obsessive attraction to her new 20 years old mute assistant.
Although Covid-19 remains mostly in the background, with “The Grand Bolero” I wanted
to explore our aching need for human connection and touch during the pandemic.
We wrote and shot the film in northern Italy, during the lockdown. Thanks to our
producers and film commissions we were able to shoot in locations where Covid-19 first
spread such as Lodi (in the chapel of the main hospital) and Bergamo’s surroundings.
The pipe organ world is the most obsessive passion I’ve ever known. Roxanne’s character
is inspired by a real organist I met at the beginning of the pandemic. Just like her, he lives
inside organs, moving from church to church repairing these fascinatingly complex
instruments. – Gabriele Fabbro
